Alternative Paths to Mental Wellness: The power of Music Therapy

By Haley Welsh, Owner of Playnotes and Board Certified Music Therapist

The path to mental wellness isn’t a one-size-fits-all. While traditional talk therapy may work wonders for many, others find healing in more creative ways by utilizing arts forms like dance, painting, drama, and my personal favorite, music therapy.

What is Music Therapy?

Music therapy is more than just playing or listening to music – it’s a structured, evidence-based practice led by board-certified Music Therapists (MT-BC), like me. We use music in a targeted way to help people improve communication, express emotions, develop motor skills, and build social connections. Depending on the person’s needs, a session might include singing, playing instruments, movement, or simply listening to music – all with a clear therapeutic goal in mind.

Where Can Music Therapy Make an Impact?

Music therapy benefits individuals across various settings and age groups, including:

  • Schools & special education programs
  • Hospitals & healthcare facilities
  • Rehabilitation centers
  • Mental health facilities
  • Nursing homes & assisted living centers
  • Hospice & palliative care
  • Community centers & nonprofits
  • Private therapy practices
  • Correctional facilities
  • Early childhood & developmental programs
  • Telehealth & virtual sessions

What Sets a Music Therapist Apart?

Music therapy isn’t just about playing songs; it’s about using music in a purposeful, goal-oriented way to help people develop real-life skills like communication, social interaction, attention, and emotional processing.

Sessions are tailored to each person’s needs, taking into account sensory sensitivities, emotional triggers, and developmental levels. Music Therapists also work alongside other healthcare professionals to track progress and ensure therapy fits into a person’s overall care plan. Music Therapists don’t just follow a script – they adjust sessions in real time based on the person’s responses, ensuring engagement, comfort, and effectiveness.

Supporting Music Therapy in Our Communities

At Playnotes, we believe in the healing power of music. Our mission is to help our community members feel better – emotionally, mentally, and physically – through personalized music therapy. And we’re passionate about making it accessible to everyone in the Pittsburgh region, helping individuals and families find their own rhythm of healing and well-being.

Thank you, Staunton Farm Foundation, for your belief and support of this alternative form of therapy. Not only does music therapy bring healing, but it brings just as much joy to our neighbors.
