Mind Matters Oct. 22

Mind Matters: Mental Health and AI

Join us for an In-Person discussion on the role of AI in Mental Health and its impact both positive and negative.

Artificial intelligence is quickly moving from the research lab to the doctor’s office with tools to assist clinical documentation, symptom monitoring and behavioral analysis. Researchers are questioning whether AI can help identify mental health conditions sooner, personalize treatment plans and expand access to care. And patients (more than one-third, according to a survey by the American Psychological Association) are already using the technology in addition to a human therapist.

But can AI be trusted in a crisis? Chatbots are designed to agree with users and can sound confident even when they’re wrong. Research from Carnegie Mellon University has found that AI therapy bots responded to clinical questions correctly just 60% of the time.

The discussion will ask:

  • Can AI be a reliable tool in mental health care?
  • How can users guard against bad advice from chatbots?
  • Could AI exacerbate existing stigma surrounding mental health conditions?
  • Could access to different AI chatbots exacerbate existing quality gaps in care?
  • And what happens to privacy when your emotions become data?
