Overview

Great facilitators do more than share information—they create learning experiences that people can actually absorb, apply, and remember.

Many professionals become trainers because they are experts in their field, yet few receive formal preparation on how adults learn or how to design educational experiences that keep participants engaged without creating cognitive overload.

As SWAG Alliance Foundation continues expanding our educational programming, we’ve been reflecting on what makes trainings engaging, accessible, emotionally intentional, and sustainable—especially for helping professionals who often arrive already carrying full nervous systems.

This interactive session is designed for current and aspiring facilitators who want to strengthen their workshop design, pacing, participant engagement, and trauma-informed facilitation skills.

What You’ll Learn

Participants will explore how to:

  • Reduce cognitive overload during trainings
  • Improve workshop pacing and flow
  • Design slides that support learning rather than distract from it
  • Balance what participants hear with what they see
  • Increase engagement through reflection and interactive learning
  • Create psychologically safe learning environments
  • Facilitate experiences that help participants stay connected, present, and engaged
  • Educational experiences should leave people feeling empowered; not more overwhelmed than when they arrived.

Target Audience

This session is ideal for:

  • Social workers
  • Mental health professionals
  • Trainers and educators
  • Supervisors and managers
  • Organizational leaders
  • Anyone who facilitates workshops, staff trainings, presentations, or learning experiences
